MRSA Staph Infection – A Growing Concern

An MRSA infection is a specific type of staph infection that is drug resistant. The superbug responsible for MRSA—methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus—is a very aggressive bacteria that has evolved and mutated over decades of antibiotic overuse. There are very few drugs that are effective against staph bacteria.

When MRSA staph infections were first diagnosed, victims were typically elderly people in nursing homes or people in hospitals who had undergone invasive surgical procedures or had weakened immune systems. Unfortunately, a new trend is emerging whereby MRSA targets otherwise healthy people in the community—athletes, for instance. Transmission of the bacteria is facilitated through the sharing of towels and other personal items.

Health officials report that there are now more deaths in the U.S. from MRSA staph infections than from AIDS.

Symptoms of MRSA

The symptoms of an MRSA infection are similar to those of other staph infections. Initial symptoms may take the form of cellulitis (a skin infection that begins as small red bumps), boils, a sty or other abscesses. If the bacteria spread into underlying tissues, fever, chills, headaches and localized pain in the joints may be experienced. MRSA can progress very quickly and is a serious medical condition.
